H.O.W. Can I Help This Christmas - Poetry
Come with me, my friends, I beg
Walk with me a while,
Let me take you on a trip
I hope will make you smile,
And maybe think a little bit
About this Christmas time
And those who are less fortunate...
Let's see what we can find...
The town is full of people here
Busy Christmas shopping,
Everyone is in a rush
Nobody is stopping
To see the man sat on the ground
No money, home or food
But hang on...
There's a lady stopped!
She's in a generous mood...
She asks of him
Are you ok?
I'm fine is his reply,
Please don't worry
About my lot, just continue
Walking by...
She smiles at him, gives him a coin
Go get a cup of tea
It's cold here and you're shivering
That is plain to see!
MERRY CHRISTMAS! The lady say's
And goes off on her way,
Smiling wide, the man gets up
To find a warm café!
On his way, he see's a dog
That looks all out of place
He thinks
Where is its owner?
He looks, but there's no trace.
He uses the coin given him
To call the number on the collar
The owner, she was worried sick
About her little fella...
You see, this dog is her best friend,
Without him she is lost
She'll do anything to get him back
No matter what the cost.
So relieved, and reunited
The woman and the dog
Through her tears from her relief
The man is just a fog...
MERRY CHRISTMAS! The man imparts
And wanders down the street
She's all encompassed with her dog
But shouts
Thank you! As he leaves...
The woman and her dog then walk
Back up into town
She thinks
Should I have paid that man
A reward?
And then she frowns...
As she's thinking, a man walks by
Elderly and struggling
He has with him many bags
He's done his Christmas shopping!
Let me help you with your load
She offers to this man
He is surprised
But grateful too
And says
Thank you, if you can...
I live nearby in a top flat
With many stairs to climb.
She helps him take his shopping home
And see's that he is fine.
MERRY CHRISTMAS! The woman says,
And leaves, quite unaware
Just how much she's helped this man
By showing him some care.
The man was feeling all depressed
And missing his late wife
His family live far away
And loneliness was rife.

So feeling a little happier
He listens to a sound...
What is that music he can hear?
It's the Salvation Army Band!
He goes back out to hear their tunes
And give them a donation
They use the money they receive
To offer some salvation!
And so this night, on the cold streets
The salvation army come
And wait..
Who is this we see
That man! You know the one,
He's the one that found the dog
He's hungry now
And cold.
The Salvation Army pick him up
Hot soup and blankets bold!
He feels that it's his life they've saved
And knows on Christmas day
He can go to them
For a Christmas meal
And even somewhere to stay!
MERRY CHRISTMAS! They say to him
And go off on their way...
And that's the end of our walk
And so to you I say...

Have a very Merry Christmas time
Enjoy it feeling fine,
Just remember little acts
Of kindness aren't a crime...
It doesn't need to cost a thing,
And the difference that is made
I hope is highlighted by our walk,
Thanks for coming,
I'm glad you stayed!
